Welcome to our Hero Collection
*the pic above was of a donation we gave to Brightside Animal Sanctuary for just over $500. We offer guests free washing powder for the laundry but if they wish to make a donation, we save them up and give them to local ‘hero’ charities.
It all started when…
We decided to turn an almost forgotten floor of a city office building in to an apartment for ourselves. But while building it we ended up getting our dog Jac and decided it would be best for a tenant. The lovely couple decided to move out when they fell pregnant, and we thought “let’s give AirBNB a go.”
That was now over 3 years ago. We have since added a 3 bedroom house next door, and built a new apartment on the ground floor of the original apartment too. We might just have an addiction to renovating. We’ve now hosted more than 400 guests and many more than once.
We love giving people a home away from home, with quality everything. We like them to feel spoiled, and Dave and I have travelled enough that we know the importance of things like a good shower, a great bed and most importantly a clean space that can feel like yours. They truly are homes away from home. We’re there if people need us, but otherwise they’re free to check themselves in and enjoy their stay.
Why the name?
We love featuring Tasmanian product in our apartments but for the name and theme we decided to go with more of a global approach. Each property is named after a person in history that, while no means angels (who is really?), were prepared to stand up for the betterment of others. Hence our ‘Hero Collection’.
Our first apartment was Madiba, the clan name for Nelson Mandela - responsible for engaging the people of South Africa through bridge building (and sport) to end apartheid.
Then we added the two story, gorgeous townhouse next door that we felt suited a president like John F. Kennedy - he took a stand against racial discrimination, utilising the national guard to ensure young African-American girl Ruby Hall could be educated in what was until then a segregated school.
For 18 months we also had a cottage dedicated Eleanor Roosevelt - she was not only a very influential First Lady of the United States but also the first Chair of the Human Rights Commission at the United Nations and fought globally for equal pay for women. This apartment is no longer with us but we’ve recently added a new female Hero (more below).
In 2020 we renovated the ground floor of the first apartment building into a modern and well-appointed apartment dedicated to Harvey Milk. Harvey was the first openly gay US official in the 1970’s and rose to prominence when he sponsored a bill to ban discrimination of gay people.
And now Betty, named after Betty White. Whether you were a Golden Girls fan, or simply followed her career through the decades, she made people laugh and had a wonderful way of connecting with people of all generations. She has been a big advocate for animal welfare and humanitarian causes donating millions of dollars and speaking up for those who couldn’t.
We’d love you to stay with us.
